Theth National Park is a protected mountain landscape in northern Albania's Albanian Alps, centered on the village of Theth in Shkodër County. Established in 1966, it is renowned for dramatic limestone peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls, and traditional mountain culture, making it one of Albania’s premier hiking and nature destinations.
Landscape and Location

The park lies within the rugged Albanian Alps (also known as the Accursed Mountains or Prokletije), where steep rock faces, forested slopes, and glacial valleys create some of the country's most striking scenery. The Theth River runs through the valley, contributing to the area's distinctive alpine character and biodiversity.
Highlights

Some of the park's most famous natural attractions include the Blue Eye of Theth (Syri i Kaltër), a vivid turquoise spring, and Grunas Waterfall, which is reached by a popular hiking trail. Visitors also explore Grunas Canyon, mountain viewpoints, and the historic village center with its traditional stone buildings and church.
Hiking and Outdoor Activities

Theth is widely regarded as one of the best hiking hubs in the Balkans. Trails range from short walks to the Blue Eye and waterfalls to the famous Theth–Valbona trek, a mountain crossing that passes through high alpine terrain and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
Cultural Importance

Beyond its natural beauty, the park preserves elements of northern Albanian heritage. The village of Theth has been recognized as a protected historic center, and landmarks such as the traditional Lock-In Tower reflect local customs and history. Sustainable tourism initiatives have also helped maintain trails and support local guesthouses while protecting the region's cultural identity.
Why It Stands Out

Theth National Park combines dramatic alpine wilderness with living mountain traditions. Its remote setting, clear rivers, iconic hiking routes, and well-preserved cultural landscape have made it one of Albania's most celebrated outdoor destinations and a gateway to exploring the wider Albanian Alps.
