Kalaja e Rozafës (Rozafa Castle) is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Shkodër in northwestern Albania. Built on a strategic rocky outcrop where major rivers converge, it is one of the country's most important archaeological and cultural landmarks, combining ancient Illyrian origins with centuries of Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman influence.
Historical Significance

The earliest fortifications date to the 4th–3rd centuries BCE, when the site served as the citadel of the Illyrian city of Scodra. Its commanding position made it a key defensive stronghold through successive eras, including Roman, medieval, Venetian, and Ottoman rule. Much of the visible masonry seen today reflects later Venetian reconstruction and expansion.
The Legend of Rozafa

The castle is inseparable from Albania's most famous folklore tale. According to legend, three brothers struggled to build the fortress because its walls collapsed each night. To ensure the structure would stand, the youngest brother's wife, Rozafa, was sacrificed within the walls, becoming a symbol of devotion, sacrifice, and motherhood. The story remains deeply embedded in Albanian cultural identity.
Architecture and Features

Within the fortress are remnants from multiple periods, including defensive walls, towers, cisterns, military structures, and the ruins of a medieval church later converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule. These layers of construction reveal the site's long and complex history as a frontier stronghold.
Views and Visitor Experience

One of the castle's greatest attractions is its panoramic setting. From the ramparts, visitors can look across the city of Shkodër, Lake Shkodër, the Buna and Drin rivers, and the distant Albanian Alps. The expansive ruins and elevated viewpoints make it both a historical monument and one of Albania's most memorable scenic destinations.
Why It Matters

Kalaja e Rozafës is more than a fortress; it is a symbol of Albanian heritage. Its combination of ancient history, legendary folklore, archaeological importance, and dramatic landscape has made it one of the country's most recognized landmarks and a defining icon of Shkodër.
