The Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ

The Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral is the principal cathedral of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania in Tiranë. Opened in the 2010s, it is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the Balkans and has become a defining landmark of modern Tirana, reflecting the revival of Orthodox Christianity in Albania after decades of state-imposed religious suppression.

Architecture

The cathedral combines contemporary design with traditional Byzantine Orthodox elements. Its spacious circular sanctuary is crowned by a large dome, while the striking white bell tower and broad plaza create a prominent civic presence. Inside, visitors encounter richly decorated icons, marble finishes, and a luminous iconostasis that follows Orthodox liturgical tradition.

Historical significance

Construction of the cathedral marked an important chapter in Albania's religious and cultural renewal following the fall of the communist regime, during which religious practice had been prohibited for many years. The complex was built under the leadership of Anastasios of Albania and serves as both the administrative and spiritual center of the Albanian Orthodox Church.

Beyond the main worship space, the cathedral complex includes a bell tower, meeting and educational facilities, cultural spaces, and landscaped grounds that are frequently used for church events and public gatherings. The interior is especially admired for its frescoes, iconography, and the natural light filtering through the dome, creating a serene atmosphere for both worshippers and visitors.
