The Et'hem Bey Mosque is a historic Ottoman-era mosque in the heart of Tirana, Albania, overlooking Skanderbeg Square. Built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it is one of the city's oldest surviving buildings and is celebrated for its exceptional frescoes, architectural heritage, and symbolic role in Albania's modern history.
Architecture and Art

The mosque's design reflects Ottoman architecture, with a single dome, slender minaret, and a graceful portico. Its most distinctive feature is the extensive use of landscape frescoes depicting trees, waterfalls, bridges, and gardens—imagery that is uncommon in Islamic religious buildings and makes the mosque especially notable among Ottoman monuments in the Balkans.
Historical Importance

Construction began under Molla Bey in the late 1700s and was completed by his son, Haxhi Et'hem Bey, around 1821–1823. During Albania's communist era, when religious practice was prohibited, the mosque was closed but preserved as a cultural monument. On 18 January 1991, thousands of people entered the mosque to pray despite government opposition, an event widely regarded as a milestone in the restoration of religious freedom in Albania.
Visiting
Located beside the Tirana Clock Tower on Skanderbeg Square, the mosque remains an active place of worship while welcoming visitors outside prayer times. Guests are expected to dress modestly and remove their shoes before entering. Its compact size makes it easy to visit while exploring the historic center of Tirana.
Why It Stands Out
Beyond its religious significance, the Et'hem Bey Mosque serves as a symbol of Tirana's continuity through Ottoman rule, communist repression, and democratic transition. Its rare painted decoration, central location, and connection to Albania's revival of religious freedom make it one of the country's most important cultural landmarks.
