Katedralja e Shën Shtjefnit (St. Stephen's Cathedral) is the principal Roman Catholic cathedral of Shkodër and one of Albania's most important religious landmarks. Dedicated to Saint Stephen, the city's traditional patron saint, it has played a central role in the country's Catholic history and remains a symbol of religious resilience after decades of communist repression.

History and Significance

History and Significance

Construction began in 1858 and the cathedral was completed in the 1860s, during the Ottoman period. It was designed on an unusually large scale for the region, reflecting the importance of Shkodër as the historic center of Albanian Catholicism. During the 1912–1913 Siege of Scutari, the building suffered damage, including a fire in its bell tower.

The Communist Era

The Communist Era

The cathedral's history mirrors Albania's turbulent twentieth century. In 1967, when the communist government outlawed religious practice, the cathedral was closed and converted into a sports hall. Its towers were removed, and the building ceased functioning as a church for more than two decades. Following the collapse of state atheism, it reopened in 1990 and hosted one of the first public Catholic Masses in Albania after the ban was lifted.

Architecture

The cathedral is notable for its impressive dimensions—approximately 74 meters long, 50 meters wide, and over 23 meters high. At the time of its completion, it was among the largest Catholic churches in the Balkans. The interior features a spacious nave and decorative ceiling artwork, including paintings associated with the renowned Albanian artist Kolë Idromeno.

Cultural Legacy

Often called Kisha e Madhe ("The Great Church"), the cathedral is both a place of worship and a monument to Albania's religious heritage. Its restoration after communism and the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1993 reinforced its status as one of the country's most significant Catholic sites. Today it remains a prominent landmark in central Shkodër and a key stop for visitors interested in Albanian history, architecture, and faith traditions.
