Liqeni i Shkodrës (Lake Shkodra, also known internationally as Lake Skadar) is a vast freshwater lake shared by Albania and Montenegro in the western Balkans. It is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula and one of the region’s most important wetland ecosystems, known for its biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and cultural significance.
Geography and Location

The lake lies along the Albania–Montenegro border, with roughly one-third of its surface in Albania and the remainder in Montenegro. Its size changes seasonally, typically ranging from about 370 to over 500 square kilometers, while the Buna River carries its waters toward the Adriatic Sea.
Wildlife and Natural Importance

Liqeni i Shkodrës is one of the most valuable freshwater habitats in southeastern Europe. Its wetlands, reed beds, and open waters support hundreds of bird species, numerous fish species, and rare wildlife, including the endangered Dalmatian pelican. The Albanian section is protected as a nature reserve and forms part of an internationally recognized wetland system.
Conservation and International Recognition

The lake’s ecological and cultural value has led to decades of conservation efforts. In recent years, Albania and Montenegro have worked together on initiatives aimed at strengthening protection of the wider watershed, including efforts connected to UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve program.
Why It Matters

Liqeni i Shkodrës stands out as a crossroads of nature, culture, and history. Its combination of rich biodiversity, cross-border significance, and dramatic landscapes makes it one of Albania’s most important natural landmarks and a defining feature of the Shkodër region.
