Following a major renovation completed in 2017, it has become one of the city's best-known destinations, blending a traditional food market with cafés, restaurants, and colorful public spaces while remaining an active marketplace for local residents.

What to see

What to see

The heart of the area is the covered market, where vendors sell fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, cheeses, olives, honey, spices, and other Albanian specialties. Around the market are pedestrian-friendly streets lined with bakeries, souvenir shops, coffee bars, and restaurants, making it equally popular for shopping, dining, or simply exploring on foot.

History

History

The New Bazaar opened in 1931 after commercial activity expanded beyond Tirana's original Ottoman-era bazaar. Although the older market disappeared during later urban redevelopment, Pazari i Ri continued as the city's primary fresh-food market for decades. Its recent restoration preserved the market's role while introducing modern architecture, colorful façades, and inviting public spaces.

Visiting experience

Visiting experience

Mornings are typically the liveliest time to browse produce stalls and experience the market at work. Later in the day, the square shifts toward cafés, restaurants, and social gatherings, with outdoor seating creating a lively atmosphere into the evening. The market is only a short walk from Skanderbeg Square, making it easy to include in a city-center itinerary.

Why it stands out

Today, Pazari i Ri is one of Tirana's signature gathering places because it combines everyday local commerce with tourism, food, and nightlife. Visitors often come for the fresh market, traditional Albanian products, and the opportunity to experience a neighborhood that reflects both the city's history and its modern urban renewal.
