Built around 1492 during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II, it is recognized as a Cultural Monument and remains an active place of worship as well as one of the city's most important historical landmarks.
History

Constructed in the late 15th century, the mosque reflects the early Ottoman development of Elbasan after the city's fortress became an important administrative center. During Albania's communist period, religious activities ceased, the building was repurposed, and its minaret was eventually lost. Following the restoration of religious freedom in the 1990s, the mosque returned to active use, with major restoration work—including reconstruction of the minaret—completed in the 21st century.
Architecture

The mosque is a classic example of early Ottoman religious architecture in Albania. It features a rectangular prayer hall, a wooden portico at the entrance, and a four-sided roof rather than the large central dome found on many later Ottoman mosques. The rebuilt minaret complements the historic structure while preserving its traditional appearance.
Cultural Significance
As one of the country's earliest surviving mosques, Xhamia Mbret represents an important chapter in Albania's architectural and religious heritage. Its location inside the walls of Elbasan Castle, close to other historic landmarks such as the city's clock tower and ancient sections of the Via Egnatia route, makes it a central stop for visitors exploring the old town and illustrates the city's long tradition of cultural and religious coexistence.
