The Ancient City of Skampis is an archaeological site in Elbasan that preserves the remains of a Roman and later Byzantine settlement established along the historic Via Egnatia. It is one of central Albania's most significant ancient urban sites, with surviving fortifications, religious structures, and archaeological remains illustrating centuries of continuous occupation.
Historical significance

Skampis emerged as an important station and fortified settlement on the Via Egnatia, the major Roman road connecting the Adriatic coast with the eastern Mediterranean. Its strategic location made it a military, commercial, and administrative center, and the city expanded considerably during the late Roman period before continuing under Byzantine rule. The settlement experienced periods of destruction and rebuilding, reflecting the turbulent history of the Balkans.
What can be seen

Visitors can explore sections of the Roman and Byzantine fortifications, archaeological remains of streets and buildings, and the area associated with an Early Christian basilica discovered through excavations. Much of the ancient city lies beneath or within modern Elbasan, making the archaeological park an important window into the city's earliest history. Recent excavations have also uncovered additional mosaics and architectural remains that continue to expand knowledge of the site's development.
Cultural importance

The archaeological remains of Skampis form the historical foundation of modern Elbasan. The later Ottoman-era fortress—today known as the Castle of Elbasan—was constructed over parts of the earlier Roman fortifications, creating a rare site where Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage can all be traced in the same urban landscape. This layered history makes Skampis one of Albania's most valuable archaeological and cultural landmarks.
