Elbasan Castle is a historic fortress in the heart of Elbasan, Albania, located at Bulvardi Qemal Stafa, Elbasan. Built on the site of the ancient Roman settlement of Scampis, it is one of Albania's most important fortified urban areas and remains a living neighborhood where historic monuments, homes, cafés, and places of worship coexist within the old walls.

Historical significance

Historical significance

The earliest fortifications on this site date to the Roman and Late Roman periods, when Scampis guarded the strategically important Via Egnatia, the road linking the Adriatic with Byzantium. In 1466, Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II rebuilt and expanded the fortress during his campaigns against Skanderbeg, giving it much of the form visible today. The rebuilt castle featured thick defensive walls, 26 towers, and multiple gates, making it a major military and administrative center in central Albania.

What to see

What to see

Unlike many castles that function only as archaeological sites, Kalaja e Elbasanit is still inhabited. Visitors can stroll through narrow streets enclosed by the fortress walls, discover Ottoman-era architecture, and visit landmarks such as the King Mosque (Xhamia e Mbretit), the Saint Mary Orthodox Church, and the remains of the historic fortifications. Sections of the ancient Via Egnatia also pass through the castle area, highlighting its long-standing role as a crossroads of civilizations.

The fortress has a nearly rectangular plan, with imposing stone walls and towers that once provided formidable defenses. Although parts of the walls have been lost over the centuries, substantial sections remain, creating a distinctive backdrop for everyday life inside the castle. This blend of Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Albanian heritage makes the site especially distinctive among Balkan fortifications.
