Elbasan Clock Tower

Elbasan Clock Tower is one of the city's best-known historic landmarks, located inside the walls of the Elbasan Castle beside the King's Mosque.

Built during the Ottoman era and rebuilt in its present form in 1899, it has long served as both a public timekeeper and a defining feature of Elbasan's historic center.

History

History

The site has housed a clock tower since the late 18th century, when public clock towers became important civic structures throughout Ottoman towns. The current tower dates from 1899, replacing or substantially rebuilding the earlier structure, and has remained an enduring symbol of Elbasan's urban heritage.

The tower is a slender masonry structure rising to roughly 19.5 meters. Its white exterior and simple proportions complement the surrounding historic buildings within the castle, while the clock faces are notable for their traditional numeral style, making the monument instantly recognizable among Albanian clock towers.
