BUNK'ART 1 is a museum and cultural attraction in Tirana housed inside a massive Cold War-era anti-nuclear bunker built for Albania's communist leadership. It is widely regarded as one of the city's most distinctive attractions, combining historical exhibitions with contemporary art to explore Albania's 20th-century past.

What makes it special

What makes it special

The museum occupies a five-level underground bunker constructed in the 1970s during the rule of Enver Hoxha. With more than 100 rooms and a large assembly hall, the complex was originally designed as a protected refuge for senior government and military officials in the event of war or a nuclear attack. Today, many of these original spaces have been preserved and integrated into museum exhibits and artistic installations.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions

Visitors move through a combination of historical and artistic displays that cover:
Albania during World War II, including the Italian and German occupations.
The communist era (1945–1990), focusing on political life, military organization, isolation, and everyday experiences under the regime.
Original bunker rooms, including spaces prepared for Enver Hoxha and other officials, military communications facilities, and operational command areas.
Contemporary art installations that encourage reflection on memory, surveillance, and authoritarianism.

Good to know

Good to know

Allow around 2 hours to explore comfortably, as the museum is extensive.
Wear comfortable shoes, since there is a fair amount of walking through underground corridors.
The bunker remains cool year-round, so bringing a light layer can make the visit more comfortable.
Many visitors recommend using an audio guide or guided tour for additional historical context.
Overall, BUNK'ART 1 is best suited for visitors interested in history, architecture, Cold War politics, and contemporary art. Rather than focusing solely on military engineering, it presents the bunker as both a preserved historical site and a place for examining Albania's communist past through documents, artifacts, multimedia, and artistic interpretation.
