Lumi Buna (the Buna River) is one of the most important natural landmarks in the Shkodër region of northern Albania. Flowing from Lake Shkodër toward the Adriatic Sea, it is renowned for its scenic riverbanks, rich biodiversity, and its role as a natural corridor between Albania and Montenegro.
Geography and Location

The river originates as the outflow of Lake Shkodër and travels roughly 41–44 kilometers before reaching the Adriatic Sea. Near Shkodër, it passes below the historic hill of Rozafa Castle and alongside the slopes of Tarabosh, creating some of the most recognizable landscapes in northern Albania.
Natural Importance

The Buna River forms part of the protected Buna River–Velipojë Protected Landscape. Its wetlands, forests, marshes, and delta provide habitat for numerous bird species and other wildlife. The area is recognized as an important ecological corridor and wetland ecosystem of international significance.
Cultural and Regional Significanc

For centuries, the Buna has been a major geographic feature linking the inland Balkans to the Adriatic coast. Today it remains closely connected to the identity of the Shkodër region and to destinations such as Shkodër and Velipojë, where the river ultimately reaches the sea.
Why It Stands Out

The combination of a historic castle backdrop, mountain scenery, navigable waters, and protected wildlife habitats makes Lumi Buna one of Albania's most distinctive river landscapes. It is valued both as a natural attraction and as a gateway to the broader ecosystems of northern Albania.
