Bovilla Lake is a mountain reservoir northeast of Tirana, Albania, set among dramatic cliffs and rugged landscapes within the Dajti mountain region. It is both one of the capital's most important water sources and one of the country's most photographed natural attractions, known for its turquoise water and panoramic viewpoints.

Location and Landscape

Location and Landscape

The reservoir lies roughly 15 kilometers northeast of Tirana and was created by damming the Tërkuza River. Surrounded by steep limestone ridges, canyons, and forested hills, the lake offers scenery that contrasts sharply with the nearby urban area. The combination of blue water, rocky cliffs, and mountain terrain has made it a popular destination for hiking and photography.

Why It Matters

Why It Matters

Beyond its beauty, the lake serves a vital public function. The Bovilla Reservoir supplies a large share of Tirana's drinking water and forms part of the city's broader water infrastructure. Construction began in the late 1980s, was interrupted during Albania's political transition, and was completed with Italian assistance during the 1990s.

Access and Practical Information

Reaching the lake can be part of the adventure. The final section of road is largely unpaved and can be rough, with potholes and narrow stretches. There is no regular public transport to the reservoir, so visitors typically arrive by organized tour, taxi, or private vehicle. Higher-clearance vehicles are often recommended for the upper sections of the route.

Conservation and Rules

Conservation and Rules

Because the reservoir is a protected drinking-water source, activities such as swimming are prohibited. The area's environmental importance, together with its role in supplying water to Tirana, means that visitors are expected to follow conservation rules and avoid polluting the lake or surrounding landscape.
