Kalaja e Prezës is a medieval hilltop fortress in Prezë, near Tirana, Albania. It is one of the country's best-preserved smaller castles, valued for its strategic location, distinctive towers, and sweeping views across the Tirana plain, while also serving as an important cultural monument.
History

The castle occupies a naturally defensive rocky hill and underwent several phases of construction. While some traditions associate the site with earlier Byzantine fortifications, the visible medieval fortress was largely developed between the 14th and early 15th centuries under the Thopia family. During the resistance against the Ottoman Empire led by Skanderbeg, it formed part of a wider network of defensive strongholds in central Albania.
Architecture

The fortress has a compact quadrangular layout measuring roughly 80 × 50 meters. Round towers reinforce the corners, while additional rectangular towers strengthen the more vulnerable walls and protect the main entrance. A later clock tower, added centuries after the medieval fortifications, has become one of the castle's most recognizable features. Archaeological evidence also shows multiple construction phases and the remains of structures built within the walls.
Visiting experience
The castle stands above the village of Prezë, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, the Tirana plain, and the area near Mother Teresa International Airport. Its relatively small size makes it easy to explore on foot, and the restored courtyard and fortifications provide an accessible introduction to Albania's medieval defensive architecture.
