Petrela Castle

Petrela Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the Erzen Valley in the village of Petrelë, just southeast of Tirana. It is one of Albania's best-known historic castles, valued for its strategic location, connections to the era of Skanderbeg, and panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.

History

The fortress has origins dating back to the Byzantine period, with early fortifications commonly linked to the 6th century. Although it has undergone multiple phases of rebuilding, much of the visible structure reflects medieval construction from the 15th century, when it played an important defensive role protecting the approaches to central Albania. During the campaigns of Skanderbeg, the castle was associated with his sister, Mamica Kastrioti, who is traditionally remembered as its commander.

Architecture

Built on a steep rocky hill, the castle's compact triangular layout and defensive towers made it well suited for surveillance and protection. Its elevated position offers sweeping views across the Erzen River valley, olive groves, and the surrounding hills, illustrating why the site was so strategically important for controlling historic routes through the region.

Visiting Experience

Today, the castle is a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and day-trippers from Tirana. Visitors can explore the restored stone fortifications, enjoy the scenic viewpoints, and dine at the restaurant operating within the castle complex, which serves traditional Albanian cuisine in a historic setting.
