Kalaja e Tiranës (Tirana Castle) is a historic fortress in the heart of Tirana, Albania, located at Shëtitorja Murat Toptani, Tiranë 1001. Although only parts of its original fortifications remain, it has become one of the capital's best-known heritage sites, combining medieval history with a lively pedestrian district of restaurants, artisan shops, and cultural spaces.
History

The fortress, also known as the Fortress of Justinian, has origins dating back to before 1300, with surviving walls reflecting its Byzantine heritage. It occupied a strategic position where important north–south and east–west routes intersected, forming the historic center of early Tirana. The site was designated a Cultural Monument of Albania in 1973, and restoration efforts have continued to preserve and highlight its archaeological remains.
What to experience

Today, the castle is less a traditional castle to tour than a historic urban quarter. Visitors can walk along the preserved stone walls, browse craft and souvenir shops, enjoy cafés and traditional Albanian restaurants, and occasionally visit exhibitions or cultural events held within the restored complex. Its location, just a short walk from Skanderbeg Square, makes it an easy stop while exploring central Tirana.
Architecture and significance

The most recognizable surviving feature is a section of approximately 6-meter-high stone walls, remnants of the Byzantine-era fortifications. Rather than reconstructing the fortress as a standalone monument, the restoration has integrated the historic walls into a contemporary public space, creating a blend of archaeology, commerce, and everyday city life that reflects Tirana's evolving identity.
