Bunk'Art 2 is a museum and cultural attraction housed inside a former Cold War–era nuclear bunker in central Tirana. It is one of Albania’s most visited historical sites, known for transforming a secret government shelter into an immersive exploration of the country’s communist past and the legacy of state surveillance.
History and Purpose

The bunker was built between 1981 and 1986 for Albania's Ministry of Internal Affairs as part of the country's extensive bunkerization program under the communist regime. Known by the codename "Objekti Shtylla" (Pillar Object), it was designed to protect ministry personnel during a potential nuclear or chemical attack. The underground complex contains 24 rooms, a communications center, and private quarters for the interior minister. It opened as a museum in 2016.
What Visitors Experience

The museum focuses on the history of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the activities of the secret police known as Sigurimi, and everyday life under Albania's dictatorship. Exhibits combine original documents, surveillance equipment, photographs, multimedia installations, and reconstructed rooms to create a powerful narrative about control, repression, and resistance.
Visitor Impressions
Many visitors describe the museum as emotionally impactful, educational, and exceptionally well curated. Reviews frequently highlight:
Immersive underground setting that reinforces the historical themes.
Thought-provoking exhibits explaining surveillance, political repression, and daily life during the communist era.
Strong storytelling through artifacts, personal accounts, and multimedia presentations.
A typical visit lasts about 45–90 minutes, depending on the level of exploration.
Good to Know
Located in the heart of Tirana, near major government buildings and within walking distance of the city center.
Photography is generally permitted inside the museum.
The attraction is often paired with a visit to Bunk'Art 1, a larger bunker museum on the outskirts of the city that explores complementary aspects of Albania's communist-era history.
The museum serves not only as a historical archive but also as a reflection on civil liberties, human rights, and the consequences of authoritarian rule.
