Shiroka is a lakeside settlement and visitor destination on the shores of Lake Shkodra, just west of the city of Shkodër in northern Albania. Known for its waterfront promenade, mountain-and-lake scenery, and traditional fishing heritage, it has become one of the most popular recreational areas around the lake and a gateway to outdoor activities and local cuisine.
Location and Landscape

Located between Lake Shkodra and the slopes of Tarabosh Mountain, Shiroka offers panoramic views across the largest lake in Southern Europe. The village sits roughly 4–5 kilometers from central Shkodër and serves as a peaceful escape from the city while remaining easily accessible.
What Visitors Experience
A major attraction is the renovated lakeside promenade, often described as a "balcony" overlooking the lake. Visitors commonly come to walk along the waterfront, relax at lakeside cafés and restaurants, swim during warmer months, cycle from Shkodër, or enjoy sunset views across the water. Boat trips and kayaking excursions on Lake Shkodra also frequently depart from the area.
History and Local Characteristics

Shiroka began as a fishing village and retains strong connections to the lake. Historical references to the settlement date back centuries, and fishing remains part of its cultural identity. The area is also associated with traditional crafts and was once linked to regional lake transport routes connecting Albania and Montenegro.
Why It Matters

Shiroka is often considered one of the most scenic spots in the Shkodër region because it combines natural beauty, local culture, and easy access to outdoor recreation. Together with nearby villages such as Zogaj, it forms part of a lakeside corridor celebrated for its authentic atmosphere, traditional food, and views of the lake's wetlands and mountains.
Visitors Tips
The waterfront is especially popular in the late afternoon and at sunset, when light reflects across the lake and surrounding mountains. Many visitors combine Shiroka with nearby attractions such as Lake Shkodra and Rozafa Castle for a fuller experience of northern Albania.
