Ura e Mesit (Mesi Bridge) is a historic Ottoman-era stone bridge spanning the Kir River near Shkodër in northern Albania. Built around 1770, it is widely regarded as one of the country's finest examples of Ottoman bridge engineering and one of Albania's most important cultural monuments. Its distinctive multi-arch design, scenic setting, and historical significance make it a major landmark in the Shkodër region.
History
The bridge was constructed during the Ottoman period, traditionally attributed to Kara Mahmud Bushati of the powerful Bushati family that governed the Shkodër area. It formed part of an important route connecting Shkodër with Drisht and the northeastern highlands, facilitating trade, travel, and communication across the region. Construction appears to have occurred in phases, with additional arches added after flooding revealed the need for a longer structure.
Architecture
Built entirely from stone, the bridge stretches approximately 108 meters (354 feet) and consists of 13 arches of varying sizes. A notable feature is its gentle bend near the central arch, an uncommon characteristic among Ottoman bridges that was designed to follow the riverbed and improve stability. The largest arch rises prominently above the others, creating the elegant silhouette for which the bridge is known.
Cultural Importance

Ura e Mesit is recognized as a significant cultural monument and a symbol of the Postribë area. Beyond its practical role in the past, it represents centuries of Albanian and Ottoman heritage, showcasing the craftsmanship and engineering techniques of the eighteenth century. Preservation and restoration efforts have helped maintain its status as a leading historical attraction in northern Albania.
Why It Stands Out

Among Albania's surviving Ottoman bridges, Ura e Mesit is frequently described as one of the longest and best preserved. Its unusual curved alignment, thirteen arches, and dramatic riverside setting distinguish it from many other historic bridges in the Balkans, making it a landmark of both engineering and cultural heritage.
