Xhamia e Plumbit (Lead Mosque) is one of the most important Ottoman-era monuments in northern Albania, located on the outskirts of Shkodër near Rozafa Castle. Built in 1773 by Mehmet Pashë Bushati, it is renowned for its distinctive Ottoman architecture, historical significance, and status as a protected Cultural Monument of Albania.
History

The mosque was commissioned by Mehmet Pashë Bushati, ruler of the Pashalik of Shkodër, during a period when the city was a major regional center. Construction was completed in 1773–1774, and the building became a symbol of the Bushati family's influence and the city's prominence within the Ottoman world.
Architecture

The mosque is a notable example of Classical Ottoman architecture in Albania. Its name derives from the lead sheets that originally covered its domes. Unlike many later mosques in the region, it follows architectural traditions associated with Istanbul, featuring a central domed structure, carefully cut stonework, and harmonious proportions.
Survival and Restoration
Over the centuries, the building suffered from floods, warfare, and political upheaval. The original lead covering was removed during the early 20th century, and its minaret was destroyed in 1967 during Albania's communist-era campaign against religion. Despite these challenges, the mosque survived because it had already been designated a cultural monument. Religious activity resumed in 1990, and a major restoration project supported by Albania and Turkey was completed in the 2020s.
Why It Matters
Today, Xhamia e Plumbit stands as one of the finest surviving Ottoman monuments in Albania. Its location beneath Rozafa Castle, near the Buna and Drin river plains, creates one of the most recognizable historic landscapes in Shkodër. The mosque is valued not only as a place of worship but also as a landmark reflecting the city's multicultural and architectural heritage.
