Located in Shkodër, Albania, the Marubi National Museum of Photography is the country's leading institution dedicated to photographic heritage. It preserves one of the most important visual archives in the Balkans, documenting Albanian society, culture, and history from the mid-19th century onward through hundreds of thousands of photographs and negatives.

Origins and History

Origins and History

The museum's story begins with Italian photographer Pietro Marubi, who settled in Shkodër during the 19th century and established one of the region's earliest photography studios. His work was continued by successive generations of the Marubi photographic dynasty, creating a visual record that spans more than a century. The archive was donated to the Albanian state in 1970, evolved into the Marubi Phototheque, and was formally opened as the National Museum of Photography on May 9, 2016.
