Holta Canyon is a striking natural attraction near Gramsh in central Albania. Carved by the Holta River through limestone over thousands of years, it has become one of the country's best-known canyon destinations thanks to its dramatic scenery, clear water, and opportunities for outdoor adventure.
Landscape
The canyon extends for roughly 3 kilometers, with steep limestone walls that generally rise between 100 and 150 meters above the river. In several places, the gorge narrows dramatically, creating a winding passage with crystal-clear pools, caves, and sculpted rock formations. Parts of the canyon also feature naturally warm mineral springs flowing alongside cooler river water, an unusual characteristic that has earned it the nickname "Thermal Gorge."
Visiting experience

Exploring the canyon typically involves hiking along and through the riverbed, so visitors should expect to wade through shallow water, scramble over rocks, and occasionally swim in deeper pools during warmer months. The route is considered suitable for many active visitors, though water levels and conditions vary by season, making proper footwear and awareness of weather conditions important. Guided canyoning tours are also available for those wanting a more adventurous experience.
Why it stands out
Holta Canyon has gained recognition as one of Albania's emerging eco-tourism destinations while remaining less crowded than some of the country's more famous gorges. Its combination of towering cliffs, turquoise water, karst geology, thermal springs, and relatively accessible location makes it popular with hikers, photographers, swimmers, and nature enthusiasts seeking a quieter alternative to larger canyon destinations.
