Belsh Lakes

The complex of 84 karst lakes is one of the most unique natural landscapes in Albania.

Belsh Lakes are a group of scenic karst lakes on the Dumre Plateau in central Albania, centered around the town of Belsh in Elbasan County. The area is one of Albania's best-known inland natural landscapes, valued for its calm waters, distinctive geology, and growing appeal as a destination for walking, photography, and nature-based tourism.

Landscape and setting

Landscape and setting

The Belsh Lakes formed in a karst landscape, where soluble rock gradually created depressions that filled with freshwater. The Dumre Plateau contains around 80–85 natural lakes, with Liqeni i Belshit (Lake Belsh) being the largest and most recognizable, bordered by the town's lakeside promenade.

What visitors experience

What visitors experience

Visitors typically come for the peaceful waterfront, easy walking routes, cafés overlooking the lake, and panoramic views across the surrounding hills. The lakes are especially popular in spring and autumn, when the surrounding vegetation is lush and temperatures are comfortable for exploring the area.

Historical and cultural context

Historical and cultural context

The lakes are more than a natural attraction. Archaeological discoveries around Belsh, including the nearby ancient settlement of Gradishta, indicate that the area has been inhabited since antiquity. The wider region has also produced artifacts connected with ancient Illyrian and later Greek and Roman cultures, adding historical interest to the natural scenery.
