The Naziresha Mosque

Built around the end of the 16th century, it remains an active place of worship while also serving as an important example of Albania's Islamic architectural heritage.

History

The mosque is generally dated to 1599, based on an inscription inside the building. Historical accounts attribute its construction to a high-ranking Ottoman official who named it after his wife, Naziresha. Since 1948, it has been protected as a Cultural Monument of Albania, reflecting its architectural and historical significance.

Architecture

The building is a classic example of late Ottoman mosque architecture in Albania. It features a single prayer hall beneath a central dome, a slender minaret, thick masonry walls of stone and brick, and windows arranged in three tiers that provide natural light. The original prayer hall has been largely preserved, and the interior retains its simple, balanced proportions.

Restoration and preservation

The mosque suffered damage from an earthquake in the early 20th century, including parts of its minaret. Major restoration work was completed in the early 2010s, rebuilding damaged elements and restoring the structure for continued religious use. While the restoration introduced some changes—such as a lead-covered dome replacing the traditional tiled roof—it ensured the monument's long-term preservation.
