Church of Saint Mary

Located inside the historic walls of Elbasan Castle, Kisha e Shën Mërisë (St. Mary's Church) is an Albanian Orthodox church and one of the city's most significant cultural and religious landmarks. Its combination of historic architecture, religious heritage, and artistic decoration has made it an important Cultural Monument of Albania since 1963.

History

The present church stands at Bodin, Elbasan, Albania, within the castle quarter (Kalaja e Elbasanit). Although the current structure largely dates to the early 19th century after reconstruction, it was built on the site of an older church whose origins extend back several centuries. Historical records indicate that an earlier church was completed in the 16th century, suffered major fire damage in the 18th century, and was later rebuilt.

Architecture and Artwork

The church is noted for its substantial stone construction and traditional Orthodox design. Inside, visitors can find frescoes and religious artwork associated with prominent Albanian icon painters, including restoration work linked to the renowned artist David Selenica, while earlier decorative traditions are connected with the celebrated iconographer Onufri. These artistic elements contribute significantly to the church's architectural and cultural value.

Beyond serving as a place of worship, the church has played an important role in the history of Elbasan. It has connections with influential Albanian religious and cultural figures, and the surrounding castle neighborhood contains other notable heritage sites tied to the country's educational and cultural development.
