Hamami i Pazarit is a historic Ottoman public bath in the city of Elbasan, Albania.

Built during the Ottoman period near the city's old marketplace, it is one of the best-known surviving examples of traditional bathhouse architecture in the country and is protected as a Cultural Monument.

History

The bathhouse was constructed during the Ottoman era, with sources placing its origins between the second half of the 15th century and the 16th century. Historical records show that it was already an important public institution by the early 1600s. It remained in use until around the 1940s, serving primarily men, while women traditionally had access on designated days of the week.

Architecture

The building follows the classic layout of an Ottoman hamam. It includes a changing room, progressively warmer bathing spaces, and a hot room, all covered by distinctive domes pierced with small openings that provided natural light while helping regulate temperature. Its stone-and-brick construction and layered domed roof make it a notable example of Ottoman civic architecture in Albania.

Cultural significance

Beyond its practical role as a public bath, Hamami i Pazarit functioned as an important social gathering place, where hygiene, conversation, and community life were closely connected. Although it no longer operates as a bathhouse, it remains a valuable reminder of Elbasan's urban development during the Ottoman period and contributes to the city's historic character.
