Ethnographic Museum of Elbasan

History and architecture

The museum occupies the former Sejdini House, a characteristic 18th-century residence featuring a traditional çardak (open gallery) and architectural elements typical of prosperous urban homes of the period. The building was restored during the 1980s and adapted as an ethnographic museum, while retaining much of its original character, allowing visitors to experience both the architecture and the history of the house itself.

Inside, the galleries illustrate everyday life in Elbasan through traditional clothing, household furnishings, artisan tools, photographs, and objects connected with the city's long history of craftsmanship. Exhibits highlight the importance of local trades—historically numbering around 80 different crafts—as well as the distinctive layout of an Elbasan merchant family's home.
