The Onufri Iconographic Museum is a museum of Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art located within Berat Castle, inside the historic Church of the Dormition (Assumption) of St. Mary. Named after the celebrated 16th-century Albanian icon painter Onufri, it is regarded as one of Albania’s most important collections of ecclesiastical art and cultural heritage.
Location and Setting

The museum is housed in the cathedral of St. Mary in the castle quarter of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its Ottoman-era architecture and religious monuments. The current church dates largely to 1797 and was converted into a museum in 1986, preserving both the building itself and the artworks displayed within it.
Collection Highlights

The museum's collection contains roughly 200 icons and liturgical objects dating from the 14th to the early 20th century. Works are attributed to major Albanian iconographers including Onufri, his son Nikola, David Selenica, Kostandin Shpataraku, and members of the Çetiri family. Many pieces showcase Onufri's distinctive use of vivid red pigments, often referred to as “Onufri's red.”
Architectural and Artistic Significance

A centerpiece of the museum is the elaborate wooden iconostasis created in 1807. Considered one of the finest examples of Albanian woodcarving, it combines Byzantine traditions with Baroque influences that were common across the Balkans during the 18th and 19th centuries. The cathedral itself is an important monument of post-Byzantine architecture.
Historical Importance
The museum preserves artworks gathered from churches and monasteries throughout the Berat region, helping safeguard a significant portion of Albania's Orthodox artistic heritage. The cathedral is also associated with the discovery of the famous Berat Codices, medieval manuscripts recognized by UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme.
