Kalaja e Beratit is a historic hilltop citadel that dominates the skyline of Berat. Dating back to antiquity and extensively developed during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, it is one of Albania’s most important cultural landmarks and forms a central part of the UNESCO-listed historic center of Berat.

Historical Significance

Historical Significance

The fortress traces its origins to the 4th century BC, with later fortifications added by Roman, Byzantine, and medieval rulers. Much of the visible structure dates from the 13th century, when the citadel was strengthened into a major defensive stronghold overlooking the Osum Valley.

A Living Castle

A Living Castle

Unlike many European fortresses that function solely as monuments, Kalaja e Beratit remains inhabited. Traditional stone houses, narrow streets, and small neighborhoods continue to exist within the castle walls, creating a rare combination of living community and historic monument.

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

The citadel contains important Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era mosque remains, and religious monuments that reflect centuries of coexistence among different communities. Notable treasures include the cathedral housing the Onufri National Iconographic Museum, known for its collection of Albanian Byzantine icons. UNESCO highlights the castle district as an exceptional example of the region's Ottoman-era urban heritage layered upon much older foundations.

Visiting Experience

The castle sits roughly 214 meters above sea level on a rocky hill above the Osum River, offering sweeping views of Berat’s historic neighborhoods, river, and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore ancient gates, defensive walls, churches, museums, and residential quarters while enjoying some of the most recognizable panoramas in Albania.

Current Landmark

Today, Berat Castle is among Albania’s most visited historic attractions and serves as the symbolic centerpiece of the UNESCO-recognized cityscape of Berat. Its combination of military architecture, religious heritage, and continuous habitation makes it distinctive even among Balkan fortresses.
