Katedralja e Fjetjes së Shën Marisë (Cathedral of the Dormition of Saint Mary) is one of the most important religious and cultural monuments in the castle district of Berat. Built in 1797 on the site of an earlier church, it serves not only as a landmark of Albanian Orthodox heritage but also as the home of the nationally significant Onufri Iconographic Museum.
Historical Significance

The cathedral stands within the fortified settlement of Berat Castle, a UNESCO-listed historic area. For more than a century it functioned as a major center of Orthodox religious life in the city, and it remains one of the most recognizable examples of post-Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture in Albania.
Architecture and Interior
The building follows a basilica-style layout with two domes, a narthex, and a surrounding portico. Its most celebrated artistic feature is the monumental carved wooden iconostasis, completed in the early nineteenth century and regarded as a masterpiece of Albanian woodcarving. Interior frescoes painted by the Çetiri family workshop in 1860 preserve the traditions of post-Byzantine iconography.
The Onufri Museum
Since 1986, the cathedral has housed the Onufri Iconographic Museum, named after the renowned sixteenth-century Albanian painter Onufri. The collection includes roughly 200 icons and liturgical objects dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries, featuring works by Onufri, his son Nikolla, David Selenica, Kostandin Shpataraku, and other important artists of the Albanian Orthodox tradition.
Why It Matters
The cathedral combines architecture, religious history, and fine art in a single monument. Visitors encounter not only a historic church but also one of Albania’s most important collections of Byzantine and post-Byzantine iconography, making it a centerpiece of Berat’s cultural identity and one of the highlights of the castle complex.
