Valbona Valley National Park

Many tourists combine it with Theth via the Theth-Valbona trail.

Valbona Valley National Park is a protected mountain landscape in northern Albania's Albanian Alps, located in Kukës County near the border with Montenegro. Known for its dramatic peaks, crystal-clear river, dense forests, and exceptional biodiversity, it has long been regarded as one of Albania’s premier wilderness destinations and remains a core part of the larger Alps of Albania National Park protected area.

Landscape and Geography

Landscape and Geography

The park encompasses the upper valley of the Valbona River, surrounded by rugged limestone mountains shaped by glaciers and karst processes. Towering above the valley is Maja Jezercë, the highest peak of the Dinaric Alps at 2,694 meters. Alpine meadows, waterfalls, springs, deep gorges, and rocky cliffs create some of the most striking scenery in the Balkans.

Wildlife and Natural Importance

Wildlife and Natural Importance

Nearly nine-tenths of the protected area is forested, supporting a rich ecosystem that includes brown bears, gray wolves, chamois, roe deer, wild goats, and the endangered Balkan lynx. The region is also recognized for its botanical diversity and contains areas connected to UNESCO-listed primeval beech forests and broader European conservation networks.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

The park is best known for trekking. The classic route linking Valbona and Theth National Park crosses a high mountain pass and is widely considered one of the finest hikes in Southeast Europe. Other popular excursions lead to alpine lakes, remote peaks, and panoramic viewpoints, while opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and nature observation are abundant.

History and Protection

History and Protection

Valbona Valley was designated a national park in 1996 to protect its landscapes, ecosystems, and biodiversity. In 2022, it was integrated with neighboring protected areas—including Theth National Park and Gashi Nature Reserve—to form the larger Alps of Albania National Park, strengthening conservation across the region.

Visitor Experience

Visitor Experience

The valley combines spectacular alpine scenery with traditional highland culture. Small villages such as Valbonë provide guesthouses and access to trail networks, while the turquoise Valbona River and surrounding peaks offer a sense of remoteness that is increasingly rare in Europe. The area is especially popular from late spring through early autumn, when trails are generally accessible and mountain conditions are most favorable.
