Liqeni i Fierzës (Lake Fierza) is a large artificial lake and scenic destination in northeastern Albania, extending into Kosovo. Created by the damming of the Drin River system, it has become one of the defining landscapes of the Kukës region, valued for its dramatic mountain scenery, recreational opportunities, and importance to Albania's hydroelectric network.
Landscape and setting
Liqeni i Fierzës stretches for roughly 70 km through steep valleys surrounded by rugged mountains. The reservoir is fed by the Black Drin, White Drin, and the Drin River, creating numerous coves, narrow inlets, and small islands that give the shoreline a distinctive appearance. The lake's calm waters contrast with the surrounding forested slopes, making it one of northern Albania's most recognizable natural landscapes
History and significance

The reservoir was formed in 1978 following the construction of the Fierza Hydroelectric Power Station, one of Albania's most important energy facilities. Beyond electricity generation, the lake transformed the geography of the region and now serves as a transportation link connecting communities in Kukës, Tropojë, Has, and Pukë. In 2014, the lake and its surrounding ecosystem were designated a Regional Nature Park by Kukës County.
Visitor experience

The shoreline offers opportunities for boat trips, photography, fishing, and quiet relaxation. From the city of Kukës, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the reservoir toward the surrounding mountains, while nearby villages provide access to more secluded coves and traditional rural scenery. The lake also serves as a gateway to other attractions in northern Albania, including mountain hiking and ferry routes through the Drin valley.
Why it stands out

What makes Liqeni i Fierzës distinctive is its combination of engineering achievement and spectacular natural scenery. Although artificial, the reservoir blends into the mountainous terrain so seamlessly that many visitors experience it as a natural alpine lake. Its expansive waters, dramatic viewpoints, and role in shaping the modern identity of the Kukës region make it one of northern Albania's signature destinations.
