The Mërtur River

The Mërtur River is one of the cleanest and most picturesque rivers between the Kukës and Shkodra Regions, flowing in the heart of the Albanian Alps.

Lumi i Mërturit is a scenic stretch of river in northern Albania, in Shkodër County, closely associated with the Shala River system and the dramatic landscapes of the Albanian Alps. It is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise water, steep limestone cliffs, and remote mountain setting, making it one of the country's best-known natural attractions.

Landscape

The river flows through a deep mountain valley surrounded by dense forests and rugged peaks. Its striking blue-green color comes from exceptionally clear mountain water, while the surrounding canyon creates a cool microclimate even during summer. The Shala River originates near the village of Theth and eventually empties into Lake Koman, a reservoir famous for its fjord-like scenery.

Visiting Experience

Most visitors reach the area by boat from Koman rather than by road, making the journey itself a major part of the experience. Popular activities include swimming in the cold, clear water, kayaking, relaxing on the pebble beaches, and staying overnight in riverside guesthouses to enjoy the quieter evening atmosphere after day-trippers depart.

Why It Is Notable

The river has become one of northern Albania's signature ecotourism destinations and is frequently described as one of the country's most beautiful waterways. Its combination of emerald water, dramatic canyon walls, and relative remoteness has earned it nicknames such as the "Thailand of Albania" in travel media, although the landscape is distinctly part of the Albanian Alps.
