Krujë Castle

Krujë Castle is a medieval fortress overlooking the city of Krujë in Albania and one of the country's most important historical landmarks.

Best known as the stronghold of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg during the 15th-century resistance against the Ottoman Empire, it remains a powerful symbol of Albanian history and identity.

Historical significance

Historical significance

The fortress was originally built during the 5th–6th centuries on a naturally defensible rocky hill. It later became the center of the Principality of Arbanon and achieved lasting fame when Skanderbeg used it as his headquarters, successfully resisting multiple Ottoman sieges before the castle eventually fell in 1478, a decade after his death.

What to see

What to see

Today, the castle is a living historical complex rather than just a ruined fortress. Visitors can explore the Skanderbeg Museum, sections of the original defensive walls and towers, the Dollma Tekke, remnants of a historic Ottoman mosque and bathhouse, and a handful of houses that remain within the castle walls. Panoramic views extend across the surrounding mountains and plains.

Why it stands out

Kruja Castle combines military history, museum collections, and living cultural heritage in a single site. Its association with Skanderbeg, well-preserved setting, and commanding hilltop location have made it one of Albania's most visited and recognizable historic attractions, offering insight into both medieval Albanian history and traditional craftsmanship.
