The Amphitheatre of Durrës is a Roman amphitheater in the heart of Durrës, Albania. Built in the early 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan, it is the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans and one of Albania's most significant archaeological monuments, reflecting the importance of the ancient city of Dyrrachium.
Historical significance

Constructed to accommodate an estimated 15,000–20,000 spectators, the amphitheater hosted gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles. After such games ceased in the 4th century, parts of the structure were adapted for Christian worship, and a Byzantine chapel decorated with mosaics and frescoes was built within its galleries, creating an unusual combination of Roman entertainment architecture and early Christian heritage.
Architecture and archaeology

The monument has an elliptical plan measuring roughly 136 meters across and reaches about 20 meters in height. Unlike many Roman amphitheaters, it was built partly into a hillside and partly on level ground. Buried beneath the expanding city for centuries, it was rediscovered during construction work in 1966, after which extensive archaeological excavations revealed much of the surviving structure.
Why it stands out

Beyond its impressive scale, the amphitheater illustrates the evolution of Durrës over many centuries—from a thriving Roman city to an important Byzantine center. The site appears on Albania's UNESCO Tentative List, recognizing its exceptional cultural value and potential for future World Heritage inscription. Today it remains one of the country's most visited archaeological attractions.
