The museum occupies the former Toptani family residence, a distinctive çardak-style Ottoman-era house built in 1764. The building itself is considered a first-category cultural monument, preserving original architectural features that illustrate how affluent Albanian households lived during the 18th century. The museum officially opened to the public on 20 November 1989.

Visitors can explore rooms furnished with authentic household items, traditional costumes, textiles, woodworking and metalworking tools, ceramics, weapons, agricultural equipment, and handcrafted objects. Together, these collections portray everyday life, family traditions, local craftsmanship, and the economic activities that shaped Krujë and other parts of Albania over the past several centuries. Many exhibited objects are original and remain in remarkably good condition.

Recent restoration

The museum has undergone a significant restoration and modernization through the EU4Culture program. Structural repairs, interactive exhibits, digital technologies, and virtual experiences have enhanced the visitor experience while preserving the historic character of the building. Following its reopening, the Krujë museum complex recorded a substantial increase in visitors.
