The Ethnographic Museum of Berat is a museum dedicated to the traditional life, crafts, and domestic culture of the Berat region of Albania. Housed in a preserved 18th-century Ottoman-era residence in the historic Mangalem quarter, it is one of the city's most important cultural attractions and offers a detailed look at how urban families lived and worked in earlier centuries.

Historic Building

Historic Building

The museum occupies a traditional Berat house built in the 18th century, notable for its stone construction, wooden balconies, internal courtyard, decorative fireplaces, and çardak (open porch). The building itself is considered part of the exhibit because it preserves characteristic features of historic Berat architecture and Ottoman-period urban design.

Collections and Exhibits

The museum preserves roughly 1,300–1,400 artifacts related to everyday life, family traditions, and local craftsmanship. Exhibits include traditional clothing, embroidery, silverwork, copperwork, weaving tools, household objects, ceramics, and furnishings that illustrate the social and economic life of Berat from the late medieval period through the 19th century.

Cultural Significance

The museum serves as a record of Berat's material and social heritage, preserving traditions that shaped the city's identity. Its location within the UNESCO-listed historic environment of Berat makes it a valuable complement to visits to the castle, Mangalem neighborhood, and other cultural landmarks.

Visiting Information

The museum is represented by Ethnographic Museum. It is situated on the route between central Berat and the castle area, making it an easy stop while exploring the old town. A typical visit lasts about 30–45 minutes and focuses equally on the historic house and its ethnographic collection.
