Dating to the early 6th century, it is considered one of Albania's most important monuments of Early Christian architecture and provides valuable evidence of the region's religious and artistic history.
Historical significance

Built during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I (527–565 CE), the basilica served as a major place of worship when ancient Dyrrachium (modern Durrës) was an important center of Christianity on the Adriatic coast. The complex was rediscovered through archaeological excavations in 1980, greatly expanding knowledge of Albania's Late Antique heritage.
Architecture and artwork
The church was designed as a three-naved basilica with three apses, side annexes, and an atrium, measuring roughly 65 × 28 meters, making it one of the largest known early Christian basilicas discovered in Albania. A monumental martyrium beside the southern nave contains remarkable polychrome mosaics depicting human figures, animals, plants, and geometric patterns, widely regarded as exceptional examples of 6th-century Byzantine mosaic art.
Preservation
The basilica was designated a First Category Cultural Monument in 1987, recognizing its national importance. Although much of the structure survives only as archaeological remains, the site continues to be an important resource for studying Early Christianity and Byzantine culture in Albania, while also facing ongoing conservation challenges associated with preservation and surrounding development.
