Parku Arkeologjik i Bylisit is an archaeological park preserving the remains of the ancient Illyrian city of Bylis in southern Albania. Founded around the 4th century BC, it is one of the country's most significant ancient sites, known for its extensive fortifications, large theater, early Christian monuments, and sweeping views across the Seman Valley.
Historical significance

Bylis developed as an important Illyrian urban center before coming under Roman influence. The city followed a planned street layout and grew into a political, economic, and cultural hub. During the 5th century AD it became an important early Christian center, with several basilicas whose remains provide valuable evidence of the region's transition from the classical world to the Byzantine era.
Highlights

Visitors can explore impressive remains spread across a broad hilltop plateau. Particularly notable are the 2.2-kilometer defensive walls, a theater that once seated roughly 7,500 spectators, the ancient stadium, public buildings, streets, water cisterns, and churches decorated with late antique mosaics. Together, these structures illustrate how a prosperous ancient city functioned over many centuries.
Impressions about visits

The archaeological park combines history and landscape, offering panoramic views over the surrounding countryside alongside its ruins. Walking through the site provides a sense of the city's original scale, and the open setting makes it a rewarding destination for travelers interested in archaeology, photography, and Albania's Illyrian heritage. Seasonal opening hours are typically longer during the warmer months.
Why it stands out
Among Albania's archaeological parks, Bylis is especially recognized for its dense concentration of early Christian monuments and mosaics as well as the substantial preservation of its fortifications. Ongoing conservation and tourism initiatives continue to improve access while helping protect one of the country's most important ancient settlements.
