Kalaja e Margëlliçit (Margëlliç Castle) is a historic hilltop fortress near Patos in Fier County, Albania. Overlooking the Myzeqe plain and the Gjanica valley, it has served as a strategic defensive site for centuries and preserves evidence of several distinct phases of fortification, making it an important archaeological and historical landmark.
History
The site's origins stretch back much earlier than the visible medieval fortress. Archaeological evidence indicates occupation during the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, followed by major fortification works in the 4th century BC. The present castle is generally associated with a Byzantine reconstruction dating to around the 7th century AD, when it became part of the defensive network connected with the ancient city of Byllis.
What makes it significant
Margëlliç Castle occupies a naturally defensible, pyramid-shaped hill that commands broad views across western Albania. Its long sequence of construction—from prehistoric defenses through Hellenistic and Byzantine periods—offers insight into how the region's military architecture evolved. The site was also the scene of fighting during the Second World War between German forces and Albanian Partisans, adding modern historical significance to its much older past.
Nearby historical context
Kalaja e Margëlliçit is closely linked with the nearby ancient settlement of Byllis, one of southern Albania's most important archaeological sites. Together, these locations illustrate the strategic importance of the region from antiquity through the Byzantine era, with the castle helping to guard approaches between the interior valleys and the coastal plain.
