Parku Arkeologjik i Apolonisë is one of Albania's most important archaeological sites, preserving the remains of the ancient city of Apollonia near Fier. Founded as a Greek colony around the 6th century BCE and later flourishing under Roman rule, it is recognized for its extensive ruins, ongoing archaeological research, and inclusion on UNESCO's Tentative List.
Highlights

The park encompasses the remains of a once-thriving city that served as a major center of commerce, culture, and education along the Adriatic. Visitors can explore impressive monuments including the Bouleuterion (council house), the Odeon, sections of the ancient city walls, temples, villas, and Roman roads, all spread across a scenic hilltop landscape. Much of the ancient city still remains unexcavated, making the site an active focus of archaeological research.
Museum and Historic Buildings

Within the archaeological park stands the medieval Monastery of St. Mary, which houses the Archaeological Museum of Apollonia. The museum displays sculptures, inscriptions, mosaics, coins, and everyday objects uncovered during excavations, providing insight into the city's Greek, Roman, and later Byzantine history.
Historical Importance

Founded by colonists from Corinth and Corcyra (modern Corfu), Apollonia became one of the most influential cities in ancient Illyria. During the Roman era it remained an important administrative and educational center, and historical sources note that the future emperor Augustus studied there in his youth. The city eventually declined after changes to the nearby river system reduced access to its harbor, contributing to its abandonment.
Information about visiting

The archaeological park lies a short drive west of Fier and combines expansive open-air ruins with a museum visit, making it one of Albania's premier destinations for history enthusiasts. The site operates seasonal opening hours, with extended hours during the summer months and shorter winter hours.
