Manastiri i Ardenicës (Ardenica Monastery) is a medieval Eastern Orthodox monastery in the hills near Kolonjë, Fier County, Albania. Founded in the late 13th century, it is one of the country's best-preserved religious monuments and is renowned for its Byzantine heritage, remarkable frescoes, and its association with Albania's national history.
Historical significance

The monastery was established in 1282 by the Byzantine emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos, commemorating the Byzantine victory over the Angevins at the Siege of Berat. It became an important spiritual and educational center, operating a theological school from the 18th century and once housing a library of roughly 32,000 volumes, which was destroyed in a 1932 fire.
Architecture and art

The complex centers on the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, surrounded by monks' quarters, a bell tower, and other historic buildings. Its interior is especially admired for richly decorated iconostasis, carved wooden furnishings, and frescoes by celebrated Albanian icon painters, including the Zografi brothers and Kostandin Shpataraku, making it one of Albania's most important examples of post-Byzantine religious art.
Cultural importance
Ardenica Monastery is traditionally remembered as the site where Skanderbeg married Andronika Arianiti in 1451, giving it a special place in Albanian national history alongside its religious significance. The monastery remains active and continues to attract pilgrims, historians, art enthusiasts, and travelers interested in medieval Albania.
How to get there

The monastery sits on a hill overlooking the Myzeqe Plain, offering broad views of the surrounding countryside. It is accessible by road from Fier and Lushnjë, and visitors typically come to experience its peaceful atmosphere, historic architecture, and well-preserved frescoes. Manastiri i Ardenicës is open to the public, although access to some areas may be limited because it remains a functioning monastery.
