It is one of Durrës' most significant surviving Byzantine monuments and provides insight into the civic, commercial, and ceremonial life of the ancient city of Dyrrachium.

Historical significance

Historical significance

The forum was constructed in the late 6th century during the reign of Emperor Anastasios I, who was born in Dyrrachium (modern Durrës). It functioned as the city's central gathering place for trade, public meetings, and civic administration, reflecting the continued importance of Durrës as a major Byzantine center on the Adriatic coast.

Architecture

Architecture

The most recognizable feature is its circular paved plaza, approximately 40 meters (131 feet) in diameter, which was originally surrounded by a Corinthian colonnade. Archaeologists have identified a central podium and a well, while the adjacent Rotunda may have supported a monumental statue or served another ceremonial purpose. Although only part of the original colonnade survives, the layout remains clearly visible and illustrates the design of an important Byzantine public square.

Location

The forum is located at Sheshi Liria, Durrës 2000, Albania, within walking distance of other major historic attractions such as the Roman Amphitheatre and the Archaeological Museum. It is an open-air archaeological site that can generally be visited free of charge and is accessible throughout the day, making it an easy stop while exploring the city's historic center.

Why it stands out

Unlike many archaeological remains that are isolated from modern development, the Byzantine Forum sits amid contemporary Durrës, creating a striking contrast between ancient and modern urban life. Its surviving circular plan, columns, and central structures make it one of Albania's clearest examples of Byzantine civic architecture.
