Built on earlier fortifications and extensively developed during the Byzantine era, it remains one of the country's most important monuments, reflecting over 1,500 years of military, urban, and maritime history.
History

The castle's present form is closely associated with the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I, a native of ancient Dyrrachium (modern Durrës), who rebuilt the city's defenses in the late 5th and early 6th centuries after earlier destruction. The fortifications were strengthened over subsequent centuries by Byzantine, Angevin, Venetian, and Ottoman rulers, each leaving architectural traces that remain visible today.
Architecture

The original defensive circuit surrounded much of the medieval city, with walls reinforced by towers positioned at regular intervals. Although only portions survive today, the remaining walls, towers, and gates illustrate sophisticated Byzantine military engineering combined with later Venetian and Ottoman modifications. The best-known surviving structure is the Venetian Tower, one of Durrës' most recognizable landmarks.
Why It Matters

Durrës occupied a strategic position on the Adriatic Sea and served as a major commercial and military gateway between the Balkans and the Mediterranean. The castle protected the harbor, controlled access to the city, and witnessed significant historical events from the Byzantine period through the Ottoman era and into modern Albanian history. Today it is a protected cultural monument and one of Durrës' principal visitor attractions.
