Located near the Adriatic seafront and close to the city's Byzantine walls, it is one of the country's most significant cultural institutions and a key starting point for understanding over two millennia of regional history.
Collections

The museum's exhibits span the Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Its collection includes more than 3,000 archaeological objects, such as Roman funerary stelae, stone sarcophagi, mosaics, sculptures, ancient pottery, rare coins, and everyday artifacts that illustrate the development of Durrës as one of the Adriatic's most important ancient ports. Displays are arranged chronologically, allowing visitors to follow the city's evolution from antiquity into the Middle Ages.
History and restoration

Founded in 1951, the museum has expanded alongside decades of archaeological excavations in and around Durrës. After sustaining damage during the 2019 Albania earthquake, it closed for extensive restoration and modernization. In April 2026, the renovated museum reopened with updated exhibition spaces and an expanded presentation of more than 3,200 artifacts, alongside new educational and cultural facilities
Visiting experience

The museum sits on Rruga Taulantia, only a short walk from the waterfront promenade and several major historic landmarks, making it easy to combine with a visit to the Byzantine walls and other archaeological sites in Durrës. The galleries emphasize the city's role as a crossroads between the Illyrian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine worlds, providing a broad picture of the region's cultural and commercial history.
