Xhamia e Mbretit (King Mosque) is a historic Ottoman-era mosque in the heart of Berat, Albania. Built at the end of the 15th century under Sultan Bayezid II, it is among the oldest surviving mosques in the country and remains an active place of worship. The mosque is also protected as a Cultural Monument of Albania and forms part of the historic urban landscape of Berat.
Historical Background

The mosque was constructed around 1492 during the early Ottoman period in Albania and became one of the principal Islamic monuments of Berat. Historical records indicate that it suffered major damage during the Ottoman suppression of Albanian revolts in the early 19th century and was subsequently rebuilt while preserving local architectural traditions.
Architecture and Interior

The building combines Ottoman design with local craftsmanship. Its rectangular prayer hall is known for an elaborate wooden ceiling divided into decorative sections, featuring carved rosettes, geometric motifs, Quranic inscriptions, and a frieze displaying the 99 Names of Allah. The mosque also includes a portico and a women's gallery, elements that contribute to its distinctive interior character.
Visiting and Significance

Today, King Mosque (Sultan’s Mosque) functions both as a living religious site and as a cultural attraction. Visitors are drawn to its preserved craftsmanship, historic atmosphere, and role in illustrating the centuries-long coexistence of religious and architectural traditions in Berat.
Cultural Importance
The mosque was officially designated a Cultural Monument of Albania in 1948. Its survival through centuries of political and social change has made it one of the country's most important examples of early Ottoman religious architecture and a key landmark within Berat's historic center.
