Ura e Goricës is a historic Ottoman-era stone bridge spanning the Osum River in the city of Berat. Its elegant arches and centuries-long history make it a key part of the city’s cultural heritage.

Architecture and Design

Architecture and Design

The bridge is approximately 127–129 meters long and consists of seven large stone arches rising above the Osum River. Its design reflects Ottoman engineering traditions, combining practical flood management with a graceful silhouette that has become one of Berat’s defining views.

Historical Background

Historical Background

A wooden bridge existed here by the 17th century, but the current stone structure was commissioned by Ahmet Kurt Pasha in the late 18th century. Over the centuries, floods, warfare, and reconstruction efforts altered parts of the bridge, including major repairs after damage in the late 19th century and rebuilding work during the 1920s.

Cultural Significance

Cultural Significance

Beyond transportation, the bridge has long represented the connection between Berat’s historically Christian and Muslim communities. It remains associated with local traditions, including the Orthodox Epiphany ceremony in which a cross is thrown into the Osum River each January.
