Lagjja Goricë is one of the three historic quarters of Berat, situated on the left bank of the Osum River opposite the castle and the Mangalem district. Known for its stone houses, cobbled lanes, Orthodox heritage, and panoramic views across the river, it forms an important part of Berat's UNESCO-recognized historic urban landscape.
Historical Significance

Goricë developed as an early residential center of Berat's Orthodox Christian community and has long been linked to the rest of the city by the historic Gorica Bridge. The neighborhood's history reflects the coexistence of different religious and cultural communities that characterize Berat, a city whose historic center is recognized by UNESCO for its well-preserved Ottoman-era urban fabric.
Architecture and Urban Character

The quarter climbs a hillside in a distinctive vertical pattern. Smaller stone dwellings occupy the upper slopes, while larger merchant houses with decorative verandas stand closer to the river. Many buildings were rebuilt or restored after the devastating 1851 earthquake, creating the blend of early Ottoman and later nineteenth-century architectural elements visible today. Thick stone walls, tiled roofs, and light-colored façades remain defining features.
Visiting Experience

Today, Goricë remains quieter and more residential than some of Berat's busier tourist areas. Visitors typically explore its narrow stone-paved streets, cross the historic bridge, and enjoy perspectives of the city's celebrated "City of a Thousand Windows" skyline. Together with the castle and neighboring quarters, it contributes to the character of the historic center represented by Old Town Berat.
