Vela Mountain

Vela Mountain is a limestone massif in northwestern Albania, located in the Mirditë area of Lezhë County and forming the northern end of the Skanderbeg Mountains.

Rising to about 1,172 meters (3,845 ft), it stands prominently above the surrounding lowlands and is visible from much of the Lezhë coastal plain.

Landscape and geology

Landscape and geology

The mountain is built primarily from Triassic and Jurassic limestone, giving it steep rocky ridges, exposed karst terrain, and a distinctive profile. The eastern slopes include younger sedimentary rocks, creating a varied landscape with cuesta-like formations and deep valleys descending toward the Fan Gorge.

Nature and hiking

The lower slopes support oak woodlands, deciduous shrubs, scattered conifers, and numerous medicinal and aromatic plants. Several hiking routes lead to the summit, rewarding hikers with expansive views that can extend across the Adriatic coastal plain, the Mirditë mountains, and, on clear days, much of northern Albania. Because the mountain rises almost directly from low elevations, hikes involve substantial elevation gain and little natural water along the route.

Cultural significance

Cultural significance

One of the mountain's best-known landmarks is Zoja e Velës ("Our Lady of Velës"), a Catholic shrine near the summit. Each year, on the first Saturday of June, pilgrims climb the mountain to attend a religious gathering at the sanctuary, making it both a natural landmark and an important spiritual destination for the surrounding communities. Traditional stone kulla tower houses can also be found in nearby settlements, reflecting the region's architectural heritage.

Location and surroundings

Vela Mountain lies between the Lezhë coastal plain and the Fan River valley, close to villages such as Rreja e Velës, Velë, and Katund i Vjetër. Its isolated position makes it one of the most recognizable mountains in western Albania despite its moderate elevation, serving as both a scenic landmark and a popular destination for ecotourism in the Mirditë region.
